Financial Aid - Is the Pell Grant In Trouble?

Since the economic recession struck the US, the universities have increased the number of students enrolled into the university. However, with an enormous number of students going to universities the US has never faced such a downfall in the Pell Grant scheme, which is estimated to be eighteen billion dollars.

It is almost a rule that when ever the unemployment is a peak, even those people who hadn't planned to go to college join an institution. Although the grant has been increased by 13 percent there are still a lot of people who have not received this grant. This is because as the number of students who enroll into a college increase, the number of students who are eligible for Pell grant increase too. Nevertheless, each school has a fixed amount of dollars which they can offer in form of Pell grant and the reason why some of the qualified students do not get the grant is because the institution is simply out of the money.

In order to be eligible for Pell grant, the annual household income of the family should be less than $40,000. In these tough times, there are many people who have been reduced to earning less than this amount not to mention the people who already had a limited source of income. This is the reason why the US is short of eighteen billion dollars because hundreds of thousands of families make less than $40,000. And as a result the number of children which emerge from such households who are eligible for Pell grant increase too.

Now, it is up to the government to come up with a solution to this problem and a way which would not deprive the qualified students from receiving the Pell grant just because the funds are not sufficient. It has been stated by the government that the amount of Pell grant offered to students has been planned to increase to $5500 in the upcoming year.
